Wet soil blamed for gypsum sludge reservoir breach in Lào Cai

HÀ NỘI — Heavy rain has been blamed for a breach at a gypsum sludge reservoir in the northern mountainous province of Lào Cai on September 七.
The dam discharged over 四 五,000cu.m of mud and untreated chemical wastewater into nearby households and two local streams connected to the Hồng (Red) River. It has severely affected local people and the ecosystem in surrounding areas.
The details were released by the Việt Nam Environment Administration on Tuesday, Tiền Phong (Vanguard) newspaper reported.
The reservoir belonged to DAP No. 二 Stock Company under the National Chemical Group (Vinachem) based in Tằng Lỏong Industrial Zone in Bảo Thắng District.
The administration said an inspection team from the National Assembly’s Science, Technology and Environment Co妹妹ittee had already warned the company about the possibility of an incident in May. However, the company ignored the warning.
The administration has ordered the company to fix the problem as soon as possible. — VNS
